Failure by stakeholders to implement the Children’s Act towards safe guarding the well-being of children

It is an undeniable fact that in today’s world, children live under cruel circumstances unimaginable to humanity and go through the worst at a very tender age, a surprising fact indeed looking at the many laws that have been formulated to protect their well being.Their innocence is snatched from them, turned into adults before time and robbed of a carefree childhood every child is entitled to.

They get imprisoned in an eternal prison of suicidal thoughts, and some sadly succumb to the urge to die. They are made to suffer from mental diseases and disorders, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder amongst them. What can be more sad!

One can ask, where is the law in all these mishaps?

Where are those who’ve been entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the welfare of these innocent souls. The truth of the matter is, those who are supposed to do something have neglected their responsibilities and they are failing to impliment the children’s laws to secure childhoods.

Now we have an answer to why there are so many bitter people in the world,  alcoholics and drug addicts, why so many homicides and passion killings. Why so many suicides!

The police doesn’t think twice before dismissing a child who comes crying to them for help from abuse. They ask the child to speak their miseries right before the people who caused it. The fear cut their tongue and the inability to argue with an elder gets them labelled as liars. The question is, isn’t it the police’s duty to protect the society, especially the vulnerable?Isn’t that what the law compells them to do? Why are they overlooking this law?

It’s sad the social welfare  is just as the same. A child’s case they juggle like a football, passing it to this person and the other one passing it to the next. All because they feel that they cannot sacrifice their time in dealing with such a devastating case. And the child will have to bear the burden alone. Having to retell his or her story to many people, who keep on passing the case to the next person. No counseling given, and even if they do, it comes very late.Lack of rehabilitation turns these kids into monstors even to themselves. They self torture, become abusive to others and some turn to alcohol and drugs to escape. Some turn to the rope! How sad!

A child who’s been evacuated from where they were being abused deserve a better surrounding and home to help them heal. But the social welfare makes nothing sure of that. Sleepless nights of hunger, no clothes, loss of dignity. It hurts so much for a girl when month end approaches.

Then there are institutions like Childline which when most children hear their name, they gets filled with hope. Until they go there! Months and months will pass by children awaiting them to come and assess their condition at home and provide the relevant help.  You know why all these delays, “just a car.” They say there’s no transport. The question is, is that worth a child’s future? Is that worth a child’s mental health?

The society care less. As long it’s not one’s child being abused they aren’t concerned. Most people witness abuse of children almost everyday and refuse to do nothing about it. But isn’t that what the law says they should do? They are supposed to speak up? It’s a crime to sit and keep quite.

The sad part is, the society rejects drug addicts and alcoholics. The poor children are left to go through it all alone. No comfort, no hope, but only Marijuana and Cigarette as the only way out.I’m reminded of the song, “Concrete Angel” by Martina McBride. “Somebody cries in the middle of the night, the neighborhours hear but they turn out the light.” She walks to school with the lunch she packed, she hides her bruises with linen and lace, the teacher wonders but she doesn’t ask” It says it all.

Nelson Mandela once said, “Giving children a healthy start in life no matter where they are born, or the circumstances of their birth, is a moral obligation of every one of us. The law is there, awaiting those who are supposed to, to do something about it. I cite these lyrics from Bachpan song by Rameez Khalid as my call for action,

“These lips are sealed, all is to hide, there’s a knot on every tongue, this tongue is young, you must speak, no one is ashamed, where’s everyone I stand alone?” Why you still quite say something?”
